Datsun 240z Hubcaps Wheels and Tires

The steel wheels on the Datsun 240z had a Diameter of 14″, and a Bolt Pattern of 4.5″ with 4 studs / lugnuts. These wheels came from the factory and had 2 tire sizes, 165 HR 14 and 175 HR 14. Many Z cars were fitted with Aluminum Wheels at the Dealer or Aftermarket. The wheel and tires got wider over the years for more traction. The spare tire was normal size, until 1977. Nissan switched to “Space Saver” foldable spare tire, designated as C78-14 Tire with a rim size of 5J-14. This came with an air inflation canister. Below is a table of the Tire and Wheel specs of Datsun Z cars from 1970 – 1983.

1970-1971 Datsun 240z Series 1 Tool Compartments for storing Jack and Tire changing Tools

I wanted to document where the jack and tools are located in the Series 1 Datsun 240z. They are behind the seat and have plastic covers. The wheel chock below may be incorrect, I have also seen foldable chocks. Nissan changed the location of the tool storage in the 1972 Datsun 240z Series 2. They are located under the carpet on the rear deck. I think these cars were so popular, they changed the location so people could fit in the back. I believe my friend sent these to me, but meta shows he posted these on https://www.classiczcars.com

This 1971 Datsun 240z Series 1 sold for over $300,000. This incredible gem is all original and a low vin # and low miles. It has the “Z” hubcaps not the “D” hubcaps. I have seen discrepancies on many Z cars on numerous parts. The fact is they used the parts they had on hand to meet production needs. Maybe the dealer swapped these out. I would’ve expected “D” hubcaps for this price, but they say this is all original

14″ Steel Wheel found on Series 1 Datsun 240z, The TOPY 14-4.5J Wheel Code /Stamp

The steel wheels were manufactured by TOPY. The 1970 – 1971 Datsun 240z (Series 1) came with 4.5″ wide rims. The code is designated as 14-4.5J, 14″ diameter with a 4.5″ width and a 15mm offset. Rim Offset is the distance the mounting hub is in relation to the center of the wheel. A 15mm positive offset means the mounting hub, where lug nuts contact, is 15mm more towards the outside of rim. Resulting in the center line of rim being moved towards the car 15mm more. Deep dish rims with a negative offset, move the center of rim away from car, causing rims to stick out wider. If you have rims with a negative offset, be careful to check tire to fender clearances. You may need to stiffen your suspension.
The 1972-1973 Datsun 240z (Series 2) had 14-5J wheels that were wider, 5 inches.

Manufacturer = TOPY
Production Date = 10/70
Width = 4 1/2 “
Offset “J” = 15 mm
Diameter 14″

The wheel can be easily identified, there are 9 cutouts. The wheels are painted the same color as the Rear Valvence and Front Grille. The color is a Charcoal Metallic. However, I have seen black enamel and galvanized wheels. These were used from the early Roadsters.

Lug nuts used on the Steel and Aluminum Wheels, from 280ZX FSM by Nissan Motor Corp. The wheel studs are M10 x 1.5, the M is for Metric, the 10 is the diameter in MM, and the 1.5 is the pitch. This is the linear distance between threads. If you have aluminum mags be sure the lug nuts you use, are correct as far as the length of the portion of the lug nut that goes into the recess. There are different lug nuts with different heights for different rims. This is very important!

Aluminum Wheels on a 1971 Datsun 240z, I believe these were manufactured by US Mags.
